Who is FEX?

FEX is a New Wave band from Kiel, founded in late 1983 and active until around 1988. With English lyrics, atmospheric synthesizers, driving guitars and a dark, melodic atmosphere, they created a sound that was both catchy and slightly mysterious – always a bit outside the mainstream. During the 1980s they played numerous gigs all over Germany, won newcomer contests and got occasional airplay on NDR radio, but remained an underground act without a major record deal. After quietly disbanding at the end of the decade, the band almost vanished into obscurity – until 2024, when their old demo track “Subways of Your Mind” was identified as “The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet” (TMMS), suddenly giving FEX worldwide recognition after 17 years of searching.

The band members were overwhelmed by the flood of messages, interview requests, and the warmth of a global community that had kept their music alive without even knowing their names. What started as a quiet 80s demo recording has now reached millions of listeners on YouTube, Spotify, TikTok, and beyond.

Today, after the official releases of the TMMS and the Skyscraper album (The Outer Edge, 2025) the remaining members are carefully digitising their old tapes, preparing more official archive releases, and planning select live appearances. They are reconnecting after decades, answering long-unanswered questions, and enjoying the surreal experience of having fans from Brazil to Japan singing along to lyrics they wrote as twenty-somethings in a small rehearsal room in Kiel.

FEX never expected this second chapter – but they are deeply grateful for it. The journey is only just beginning.
