Ghia was a home studio project born in Bielefeld, Germany. The band was founded in 1983 by longtime friends Lutz Boberg and Frank Simon. Around 1985, they teamed up with singer Lisa Ohm, whom they met through Wigbert Piper at the local Cottage studio. Boberg and Simon typically composed the songs and wrote the lyrics together. Lutz, classically trained on the piano, handled the keyboards and bass, while Frank took care of the technical side and served as the band’s guitarist.
In the late ’80s and early ’90s, the band came close to landing a major record deal, but it never quite materialized. Once those big-label prospects faded, they released the single “You Won’t Sleep On My Pillow / What’s Your Voodoo?” on the independent Mikado label. In 1993, Ghia put out six more tracks on CD, which would end up being their last official release for quite a while.
Almost 30 years later, in 2019, their original vinyl tracks began gaining traction online, leading to a reissue and several appearances on various compilations. A few years after that, a treasure trove of unreleased recordings was discovered on tape—ranging from modern jazz-funk to soulful pop. This discovery led to a series of new vinyl releases on their label, The Outer Edge.
